Aluminum Recycling

Aluminum is a metal which constitutes about 7 % of the earth's crust. Aluminum is basically found in the form of bauxite ore. The most common use of Aluminum can be easily seen in the cans of soft drinks. The wide use of aluminum is basically because of its low cost and light weight. Since aluminum is used so much, there arises the need of recycling it.

Aluminum recycling is the process that enables the reuse of Aluminum products. In the process of Aluminum recycling, the Aluminum product is merely melted to form a new product. Aluminum recycling is a very cheap process as compared to the one in which products are manufactured directly from its ore. In addition, Aluminum recycling also uses less energy than the process of creating aluminum from its ore, since the latter process uses vast gradation electrolysis. If one further compares these two processes then undoubtedly aluminum recycling will be a invincible winner. Talking about the process of extracting Aluminum from the ore, it includes two processes or stages that are mining and refining. Both these processes require tremendous supply of electricity. In contrast, Aluminum recycling produces about 5% of CO2 which is almost negligible as compared to the mining and refining process. Because of the above said factors and comparisons, Aluminum recycling has become an integral part of Aluminum industry. The materials that are used for Aluminum recycling are different automobile parts, containers and many more. It must be mentioned here that Aluminum recycling has no effect on the basic chemical structure of Aluminum. Hence, Aluminum recycling can be done endlessly.

Brief History of Aluminum Recycling

Aluminum recycling is in existence, since the beginning of 1990's. Till the beginning of 1960, Aluminum recycling was a restrained process. Towards the end of 1960's, Aluminum recycling gained acclamation particularly because of the use of Aluminum in various beverage cans.

The process of Aluminum recycling includes following steps: -

  • Some small Aluminum products like cans are first shredded and then converted in tiny parts
  • .

  • Then, molten Aluminum is created by melting these tiny parts.

  • Then, large ingots are made by mixing molten Aluminum with moulds.

  • Lastly, the ingots are passed through rollers and various Aluminum sheets of different thickness are created.
